TechCharities

Nonprofit Redesign

Overview

Background

This three week project culminated in a UI prototype of my team’s redesign of the nonprofit website called TechCharities. As a team, we used the double diamond design thinking model to create and present our prototypes to the company owners. We felt that this was an extremely valuable nonprofit. There are many family who are in need of computers to be able to do their work and school from home, especially as many everyday function shifted to remote, online word after the pandemic.

Goal

We found that users struggle to navigate how to donate their used devices on the curren TechCharities website. Our goal was to produce a prototype that would allow users to feel confident that their donations are being received and used by the populations in need. This would reduce frustrations of donors and give users peace of mind.

Roal and Team

4 Stetson Stokes, Hunter Metcalf, Mikaela Madsen. 3 week. I was responsible for creating a responsive design and to make sure that the web page designs rendered seamlessly on many different screen sizes.

Ideation

User Research

Our research focused on theuse task of donating old tech. Our objectives were to discover what drives people to donate their tech, how user determine where to donate tech, and what barriers kept donors from using the website. User interviews were conducted over zoom as well as through google surveys.

Brainstorming

We discovered that accessibility to donating tech was both the users and stakeholders main concern. we sat together as a team to brainstorm different features we could prioritize in our designs.

User Flow

User flow focused on the donation task with the goal in mind of making the process of giving personal information feel more secure. Catering the donation process to both individuals as well as larger groups or organizations that gave an option to make bulk donations.

Design

Low Fidelity wireframes

The initial desktop low-fidelity prototypes were created as a team. Our focus was making the Donation process the priority user task.

Usability Testing

After prototyping our low fidelity designs, we wanted to check in with users to make sure we were on track out our usability goals.

Mid Fidelity Iterations

Final Iterations

On my own, I fixed issues I found with the group's mid-fidelity designs. First of all, I found that it was much too crowded. There wasn't a lot of margin room, making the pages feel crammed. The scaling was also off - the font was much too big making the spacing along the pages feel uncoordinated and gigantic. I created different frames for each portion of the home page and separated them out. I made the font smaller and got rid of some extra graphics to give it a cleaner, spacey feel.

I also added a layout of the steps of Donating so that uses knew where they were in the process and so that they could see how much more needed to be done.

Results

The finish product was a web prototype that met user goals of getting through the donation process. After user testing the final prototype, users reported the set up evoking positive emotions. After presenting to the owners of the site, they claimed that these new designs would help drive engagement. The final design succeeded in elevating the interaction between users and the TechChairty Website.
